7/24/2023 0 Comments Cincinnati observatory![]() ![]() The monastery is now the corporate headquarters of Towne Properties – a property management company.Īlthough Cincinnati was largely Presbyterian in its early history, Mount Adams was originally a strongly Catholic working-class community composed of the Germans and Irish. The old observatory later became the Holy Cross Monastery and Church and expanded, but closed in 1977. The observatory is still in operation today, though in 1871 it was moved to its current location in Mount Lookout due to excessive smoke from downtown buildings. The hill was renamed Mount Adams in honor of President John Quincy Adams, who delivered the observatory's dedication address. When the Cincinnati Observatory opened in 1843 it owned the most powerful telescope of its kind. Īllegedly to increase his property value Longworth donated a portion of the hilltop to the Cincinnati Astronomical Society for an observatory. The American Civil War created a shortage of manpower needed for vineyard labor, and the death of Longworth in 1863 furthered the end of Cincinnati's wine industry. The wine inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to write the poem "Ode to the Catawba Wine." Contemporaries reported that Longworth's wine "transcends the Champagne of France." The winemaking industry around Cincinnati grew rapidly for several decades until it was virtually destroyed by downy mildew, powdery mildew, and black rot around 1860. Longworth would become the first commercially successful winemaker in the United States, and has been called the "Father of the American Wine Industry." During the 1830s and 1840s Longworth cultivated Catawba grapes, which were used in making his champagne known as Golden Wedding. In 1831, Nicholas Longworth, a wealthy attorney, purchased the mansion that is now the Taft Museum of Art and the large lot of land behind including barren Mount Adams. In the early 1800s the steep Mount Adams hillside was largely barren as early settlers had cut down all the trees for timber to construct their homes. The namesake was from Ida Martin, a washerwoman who lived in the hollow of an old sycamore tree located on a steep hill. It's incredibly dated in a dated surrounding.Mount Adams was originally known as Mount Ida. There is no signage really indicating it is even inside the school. The facility inside the Planetarium is run down like the Norwood High School. I closed my eyes after a little bit wondering when it would be over. My son who is 8 was a bit bored after 5-10 minutes. I guess I expected after 20 years of seeing the last one, there might be some technology updates in the show and a more spectacular laser show. After 5 minutes I was like, ok, I think I'm done here. It's exactly like watching an animated spiragraph show. They reviewed the constellations a little bit, that was dizzying as they tried to get their cursor on the screen on just the right star to click. The experience was well.let's just say I'm glad I bought a Groupon and didn't pay full price. No offense but the neighborhood looked questionable. It is now inside the top floor of Norwood High School (!). I visited this planetarium years ago when it was located elsewhere in Cincinnati. I reserved my tickets online before we went. There was not one empty seat and everyone was clapping to the music, etc. It cost me $8.00 for two tickets which was very reasonable. My daughter and I loved it and we will definitely go next year if it is offered. I am so glad we decided to go because it was awesome. However, I decided to brave the dark walk to a door and we were let in by one girl who took our tickets. There were very sketchy folks walking around outside the school and I was alone with a toddler, so of course I thought perhaps we should just go home and not attempt to walk in the dark. (By the way, they won't let you in the door until approx. Eventually I called Norwood Police Dept and asked them and they told me it is inside Norwood High School and helped me figure out where to park because once you park, you have to walk quite a distance to go in a certain door. I kept calling the planetarium # but no answer. The show didn't start till 8pm so when we drove there it was dark. I'm not sure why, but I decided last minute to buy myself and 3 year old daughter tickets to the Holiday Laser Show for something to do while my husband worked. I saw a coupon in Valpak for three different shows. ![]()
